Within, Without

Learn from the candle's flame, as it flickers and glows to lure away the night,
See it burn in unison with desires to know the forgotten salvations of delight.
Teardrops are mixed with memories of moments plucked from yesterday's lore,
And you can't believe that you remember all the things you'd forgotten before.
For what seems so far away now is held close to your heart, to live once again,
While you're left unsure if this pain was worth all the wonderful it had been.

So this is how to celebrate the good times, cursing how we faded to the past,
Wasting a lifetime of regrets on some forever that disappeared much too fast.
It took a leap of faith to give ourselves a chance, then a step back in fear,
Terrified of crossing some line we drew dictating how we'd never arrive here.
Good enough to venture, but not quite sufficient to divine a method to stay,
We were better than that just long enough to watch the other one drift away.

There's no such thing as love in vain if you know what it does for your soul,
It's the only part of God that resides in places your humanity can't control.
Deep within the loneliness, down where it feels the blackest and most impure,
The hope of something special chains itself to the wish to know we'll endure.
Bound to a prayer, holding on to beauty of what once seemed beyond doubt,
Where we shall be reunited is within, never again to experience living without.
