You've Come A Long Way, Baby

Love as much kicking and screaming as in graffitied dreaming; pretty smiles battered,
No rose allowed in the windshield of her getaway vehicle; glass stained then shattered.
Take only what you can carry, necessities, prayers, some luck, then hell out of Dodge,
Listen to how loud his protestation of devotion was when she backed out of the garage.
Chase down neighborhood streets served as a second honeymoon; romantic interlude,
Like well-wishers at their wedding had done before, onlookers oozed a hopeful attitude.

When one imagines faceting of a union, horrors are rarely first thing leaps to the mind,
Never expect to see more Hyde than Jekyll or calculate what you have to leave behind.
Women havin' to strive to merely survive; Lord almighty, what have my brothers done?
Make some point with the backs of their hands or with the barrel of an intimidator's gun.
Might make you right to yourself, boy, but in the longer run she's wiser than you by far,
'Cause come the sunrise you're stuck with you and she's leapfrogged wherever you are.

Fast forward to the scene of her self-actualization; life redefined and acclaim all around,
Got herself a replacement for Mr. Wonderful, treats her well; new, more steady ground.
Close enough to forever for her satisfaction; near anything beats how things used to be,
Like the leap from Hell to Heaven, a little peace is more than enough, most would agree.
Doesn't require perfection to be perfect for you; leave room for an improvement instead,
I know you've come a long way, baby, so just imagine what miracles might await ahead.
