Sloppy Joe

Strangest fellow ever, this man named Joe; he hopped around rather than walk,
Tended to grunt more'n offer up conversation; noone ever proved he could talk.
Twinkle in his eye, perfectly parted hair; more dapper than any law would allow,
Noted was his popularity with the fairer sex but we couldn't conceive of just how.
He mastered donkeytail pinning, which won over the kids; also excelled at darts,
Come to think of it, can't recall anybody with more holes in one from these parts.

Now this was mysterious for sure, 'cause grace and this man weren't introduced,
He'd fall off a Tennessee riding horse and knock a Rhode Island Red off its roost.
Sign in the local china shop banned him; he wasn't even allowed into the steeple,
Never heard of another town that passed so many laws against one of its people.
Ol' Joe took it in stride as best as he could; he was bound to stumble here, there,
Can't blame a man for being so careful yet still upending convention everywhere.

Nosey folks always spoil the surprise, you know; sure enough they picked on him,
Come the citywide summertime carnival, mayor's daughter took Joe out on a limb.
They snuck on down to Heatherton Hollow, where young lovers go to play, explore,
Lil' time passed, out come her gasp, and the citizens gathered as never had before.
Surprise met their eyes; Joe stood above a bank castin', but what got her to squeal,
Was that the fish were a-biting at what he was invitin', but he used his rod as a reel.
