Gas Station Postcards

Lingering silences
overshadow clouded conversation,
And I
understood that being "worse-off" might be a gift--
Blessing in disguise,
Things happen for a reason.
Amid Hallmark sentiments and lovestruck handwriting,
shipped through Post Offices
made for "Expressed" mail
and cheap gas station postcards,
Unrehearsed love songs
develop faster
than the three-year-old 35mm images
which never left my camera's shutter,
for whatever reason.

Maybe for us, the price was too costly
for a shot of happiness.
I think to have end up framed
in lovestuck poses
on gas station postcards
with Hallmark sentiments underneath
in lovestruck writing,
would have been more appropriate.
Next to over-the-counter remedies
with empty promises,
Across from dream-filled magazines
of beautiful relationships and lives,
All more expensive
than our twenty-five cent image
on cheap paper
which, by our standards,
Still would feel too costly
to be worth acquiring,
or keeping.
