Reawakening

Poets have written elegies to it:
the pain of giving up a heart's desire
the lingering ache in the soul from
surrendering a cherished wish
laying away with tender care
the frail corpse of a dream
faded roses, dusty ribbons and tears

But what of the agony of reawakening
of a hope you had given up forever -
the bittersweet pain of
breathing life oh-so-gently into its fragile form
feeling it come to tingling life again
pierced to the heart by the knowledge
of what wounds may come
