I Remember You

I remember you
You were the kind ones
When I was small
You took me to the beach
On warm summer days
We took the bus to Second Avenue
You watched as I played in the water
You never swam just cared

I remember you
You were Hawaiian Punch and chocolate cake
We would walk to the A & P together
A carton of Winstons for two fifty please
Three flights of stairs where the angels lived
Love and kindness always came with you
And followed you wherever you went

I remember you
You let me drive your "60" Chevy
On the way to Noble Street school
I sat on your lap and smiled
You loved me and held my hand
The steering wheel made me feel strong
Secure and confident as we guided
That Impala down Campbell Avenue
And when we arrived
My day brightened again
Our favorite teacher was calling it quits

I remember you
You loved me when my mother died
And always believed I could climb any mountain
I sought your guidance and you gave me your advice
"You kid you Babe" meant go for the prize
No matter how difficult the struggle
Endure, prevail, love and feel passion
Ask me another question
Let me help you with the answer
It's OK

I remember you
You have been so kind to my children
You loved them like you loved me
You kissed them like they were your own
And like me you gave them your
Special gift of understanding and listening
Your patience and undying support
Every birthday every Christmas every time

I remember you
The spirit of love fills me
When I think of you
The world of possibilities seem so real
The space of time so small
But today is a wonderful day
To say thank you for it all
