Unforgotten Things

You keep safe now, a shadow
In the distance, feigning sightlessness
As a means of self-preservation--
But it isn't likely, love, that you believe it.
You try too hard to appear
Perfectly calm, balancing twin masks
Of blindness--serenity and supposed ignorance.
But those who hide best
Do not even appear to be hiding--
And I know a polished facade when I see one,
And as haphazard as your smile is,
You carry yourself a little too well.
Still, passion wages an unseen war, waiting
In the stillness of unforgotten things, collected
Memory-desires that you cherish
And simultaneously regret--
After all this time, tragedy and ignorance,
My presence still unnerves you,
And I can't say that doesn't make me smile.
For all your measured calm, your heart
Is merely one more illusion, one more wild thing
That even you cannot control.
