A Gift

Today, I will give you a mirror- not just because you're vain,
but because I want you to look at our reflection,
and know that year after year, we will look at ourselves as we grow older,
and grow more in love with every birthday that comes and goes.
And despite the changes in our lives, every birthday, you will look in this mirror,
and find me, still standing right beside you.

I will also give you music.
I'm not a singer.  I can't even hold a note.
But I will sing to you because I know I'm happy when I'm singing.
And I'm happy every time I'm around you.
It's just natural then that I would sing, not because I can,
but because I sing for you.

Today, I will give you a home-made cake.
I'm not the slightest bit domestic,
but I'll bake you a cake to show you that I will try to be a good wife.
I may not know how to do the laundry,
or mop the floor,
but I will bake you cakes,
and I will make your bed,
and I will love you,
not just because you're the love of my life,
but because you're also my best friend.

Finally, I will give you a letter, stained with tears and my love.
And in this letter, I will tell you that I remember all the things you have done for me,
and that I pick fights with you, not because of your faults,
but because I see my own imperfections far too clearly.
And in this letter, I will tell you that my life is better, not because I found you,
but because I get to keep you.
