One Fine Day

It was lifetimes ago
a summer afternoon
in a park named after the clouds
where you bought me mangoes dipped in rock salt
and you told me that you will marry me here someday
in this park named after the clouds
where a hundred contradictions occur each moment
like the sand-less beach beyond the emerald cotton grass
the only place where lava is cradled in water
where love begins and ends again
within seconds, like a heartbeat,
or perhaps it all happened after years of sorrow,
years of compromise, I don't know,
but in this place,
where the caricature of our unbridled youth is engraved
the scent of pine fills the Laguna tropical air
and I am reminded of home,
but before I leave,
before you leave me,
I will paint this picture in my mind
and hope that one day,
I will return back to this place,
a place of a hundred contradictions
and know that the mark of our love remains.
And when old age has made my heart wiser,
and my soul kinder,
I will forgive you.
And when my youth has escaped from my tired fingers,
and I am in the last days of my life,
I will return here
and remember the most beautiful summer afternoon of my life,
and even then,
I will be unprepared for the beauty of you.
