The Wanderer

The Wanderer

I have always been there for you
At 10 am or half-past 2
When you need my counsel or warm arms to hold you
When the world has turned its back
And all the street signs disappeared
Twice I have asked to join me
Twice I have heard my own voice echo
like a boomerang in the night
I will ask no more
You are lost
I am not your map
Nor do I want to be
Nor will I drop breadcrumbs
to help you find your way back to me
I am confused, not bitter
You above all men need to be free

I understand enough to know
Through silver moonlight fractured dreams,
Through visions lost and found
You need to find your own way out of the maze
Through dreams you've chased
battles you've fought
Lessons that were hard-won
On rough and silent seas
You will do so
In your own time

I feel you deep inside of me
Like a clock quietly ticking away
Ever present yet out of sight
You have so much emotion kept inside
Fearing the love and acceptance you could give?
For your journey
I have given pieces of my heart and soul to you
And my prayers
Whatever will be, will be
Happenstance destination?
Return to me?
You and the sea?

Perhaps some cold winter night
When the windows of my home
Are thick with spiraled frost
My once brown hair turned gray
Perhaps as the pastures and meadows
Lay silent under a crust of new-fallen snow
Glistening under the pale moon
Perhaps the wanderer will knock upon my door
And my heart will welcome you
Home
And you will know
It is where you were always meant to be
