Forgiveness

Back in the world of fashion and lipstick
Long before law school and courtrooms and trials
We had a saying:
"Dress not for who you are, but for who you'd like to be."
A sudden epiphany in the midst of my newly-broken heart
Made me realize:
That's the only way to love, as well.
Love and lose not for who you are, but who you'd like to be.
Stand up and straighten your skirt, and say I'm sorry, even when you know you're owed those words yourself.
Vogue magazine tells us that "Glamour is possible, even in adversity."
I'd like to think I was glamorous as I called you--
Tear-stained t-shirt still on my body, yesterday's smeared mascara splashed across my eyes--
To say that I was sorry--
sorry for letting my emotions get the best of me--
sorry for not being "who I'd like to be."
It didn't change anything,
But it reminded me that I have more to offer than ever,
And I'll keep looking to find that
Worthy recipient.
