sew then

this morning you said that you would never buy nautica pants again.  they ripped too easily, you said. and i could see the tear, down the front flap of your pants.  white against the gray.  two weeks ago i had to sew the thumbs and fingers of your gloves, where the seams had come undone.  the green knitting open to the dark insulation underneath.  your fingers bearing themselves into the cold world.  now i have your socks to mend, the ones with toe holes that you still insist on wearing, rather than buying new ones.  and your heals stick out of some them as well.  and i will sit there in the warm lamplight, with the candles blazing in the background.  touching the clothes that touch you every day.  i never thought one day i would find myself darning socks, that i would even want to. or mending thumbs of gloves.  but it's amazing how much your happiness means to me, if only to keep your appendages warm.  and i suppose i would mend your pants, sew on your buttons when they are pulled off, or fix the holes in your knees should they ever pop up.  but, don't ask me to knit a blanket, you'll be waiting for years.
