A Pose for Pictures

Double-take, double
the exposure, a rift
in me you might recognize,
but that's just a backdrop,
a place I've been,
a sin I've smiled. So stop--
guessing, wondering,
supposing, gesturing
around a dance. Take a step--
ask me to follow, but know
that I'll try to lead.

I tilt my head
when I smile, a pose for pictures,
snapshots--the things I keep.
But I've never been found,
not in the way you want--
the blue song I knew
ravished me, and then left
me a fool. I can count the ways
of creation, mirror things
I should not, and break a heart
like kindling fire--
but that is not what I choose.

If rough
could the smooth the edges,
would you? If polish
could shelter the break,
could you? If anything
will draw a blaze in water,
should you? Forget the questions--
just know
I will. And every nerve may end,
but electricity travels
in a circuit, and where it stops--
it also begins.
