Ladder of Night

  I have questioned human existence,
how our cloth was woven from the soil and stone,
and somehow even the flesh of the silver stars.
I have even questioned God,
  not his existence,
his being, I know he is everywhere,
even in the delicate folds of gold streaming through
   my pane at dawn,
but, only the insolent, introspective, ideal,
that life could possibly hold no true meaning for me.
That he in theory,
  had created a dud,
just a slowly meandering shell with no true spark.

However, in all of my pondering there was a constant,
a blanket of truth that kept me bathed in a subtle
    warmth,
   it was you....

You were a reminder to me that I held purpose,
that my eyes held a flame
which you would never let fade.

How was I ever to know that you were my greatest
    masquerade?
  The blackness of your eyes
being the counterpart of your soul.
You dug a hole for me
   made of solid shadow,
one you knew that I could never climb.

But I have now learned that
my fire is true and real,
and if you look deeply enough,
    though it has faded,
a mere flicker of a candle spark,
    it is there...

Your ocean will not drown my light,
I have built a ship around my heart
and I will sail until the sky meets the sea,
where I shall climb that brilliant ladder of
     moon and sky,
till I am that silver star lost in the ebony
     of your night...
