the truth about love

the great
and terrible truth
about love
is that it will kill you--
and if it doesn't kill you,
it might just maim you a little.
Failing that, there might actually
be days where you can
walk in a straight line, seeing straight,
and hold intelligent conversation
(minus your own inner monologue,
which goes something like, "you know,
that reminds me of the time that...)--
of course, I'm more inclined to believe
that line's a fairytale.

so, the great and terrible
truth
about love--there it is.  Do with it
what you will.  Scoff, laugh,
or start reading the Bible,
because love is the James Dean
of emotions: it doesn't care who
you are, or where, or why--
it only cares who you're with,
or who you want to be with,
and it will always
play chicken with your head.
