Our date nights

usually featured chile -
red and green -
almost too hot to eat
and always our city,
seen from the restaurant
window
just as night fell and
lights came on,
spreading like sparklers
from the mountain
foothills
to the valley floor.
What's more,
looking across the table,
it all made sense -
from you and all
you'd brought
to this thing we called
a life
to the streetlights
in the park
across the way -
because,
really,
who wants to be
in the dark?
But now
the light is gone.
It's already night.
The menu is written in a
different language,
and the waiter
has nothing to recommend.
