Be Free

"Be free," he said to the bird
And he gently unlatched the door
Keeping her safe
From the outside world
But she sat quietly perched
Cocking her head to the side
Not quite understanding
The words the man had said
"Be free," he said again
He leaned down to her cage
Hoping she would somehow comprehend
She hopped on her perch
To the sound of his voice
And stayed where she was safe instead
"Be free," he repeated
And he reached inside
Discarding her food
To lure her out from within
"Be free," he said nearly crying
He walked away this time
Forgetting to remove the chain
He had placed around her leg
