Personal Objection

Why isn't there a sound
when a plump moist heart
cracks down the middle,
like a porcelain plate,
not neatly
but jagged?

Why do they always think
they can make the ache
less bone deep
by saying it will be GOOD
for you somehow,
to feel yourself in pieces?

Why does it always start
with nerveless numb,
you can't believe your eyes,
can't trust your ears,
and then you feel
that white heat tear
that empties you
into a kind of hurt
that you forget to breathe?

Surely there should be a sound,
a noise,
something to mark the place
where loving heart
is turned into lonely fool?
Because it would help
if you knew it was coming.

I object.
I truly do.
