Swollen Heart
I've been through a thousand wars and back,
but you'll find this body whole.
Instead I've built a fortress
'round my over-sensitive soul.
My whole existence aches for you
and the love you have to give.
I know to drown in your sweet love
is the only way to live.
I need something to give me a start.
You've danced me out under my dreams,
but I can't see the stars.
And you can't penetrate my swollen heart.
It's been battered in the battles
and it's lost beneath the scars.
So feeling like you just can't win
you collect your love to go.
And my brain keeps searching for a way
'cause I have to let you know.
You see my heart is captive in these chains
and anchored to this wall.
I can't afford to lose your love yet
my heart won't take the fall.
It won't allow me to lose control
and let your love flow through these veins.
Because my heart's become defensive;
it's seen love's wreckage and love's pain.
I need something to give me a start.
You've danced me out under my dreams,
but I can't see the stars.
And you can't penetrate my swollen heart.
It's been battered in the battles
and it's lost beneath the scars.
