Mask-Erade

One mask conceals her sorrow
another hides her fears.
She coaxes frowns into smiles
tears into joy, laughter...
ministering to the crowds
who gather before her.
A marionette controlled by
invisible wires, unearthed desires.
The need to humor others is
more compelling than trying
to find what pleases her.
To look inside would be too painful.
Who lightens the heart of a clown?
