AMARCORD: Whitman

I remember--
How, with drunken synchronicity,
I opened your collection of Whitman,
and how he spoke
(directly to me)
of you.

He reminded me
how "the scent of these armpits"
is an "aroma finer than prayer."
O savory moment!

I remember--
The voice of a man,
gone a hundred years,
now come,
to refresh a thing once past--
A memory--
of You.
