we trudged into the garage,
bored, but giddy together,
and found the hammock.
excited for a project, we carried it outside,
tripping over green striped fabric with glee,
dropping metal poles loudly on the cement.
.
we fumbled, grinning at each other as the sun set,
trying to follow the directions on how to put
the damn thing together.
victorious at last, we tumbled in,
only to find we barely fit, the both of us.
you were breathing hard.
.
afraid of collapsing, we positioned ourselves carefully,
me on top of you,
clinging tightly, examining your shadowed face.
we paused softly in silence,
then burst into smiles.
.
arms wrapped tightly around each other,
we glanced at the rosy glimmering ocean
with lavander and blue clouds hanging on the horizon.
the summer night cool tugged at us
and we rolled out onto the grass,
laughing, kissing.
.
we walked inside,
holding hands, holding eyes,
anxious for when we would sneak into the other's room
and be in love all night.
.
the hammock, forgotten, gathered dew on the back lawn.
