To Love At All

Only in worn dreams did I really ever have you...
Lonely, in fitful hours of half-sleep.
On waking, a vague memory of shadows,
No more lingering than morning dew.

Ache and heartache, the senses quickly recall...
Spared little in a lifetime of emotions.
Time left to sleep comes hard for widows.
How wretched to lose a love....to love at all.

With time, a ray of light, a new emotion...
The hope someone may touch this slow heart,
Release a hurt, erase a grief...my old foes.
Even earn a new, complete, and lasting devotion.
