After the Phone Call
It's been a while
since I've heard your voice.
I almost forgot how good it sounded.
It seems that time
hasn't changed you much;
You sound the way you did
when we last spoke.
Has it really been
that long?
Days, weeks, months, years...
the clocks have seemed
to stop turning since then.
But you sound content;
of that, I am sure.
I guess she does make you happy,
happier than I ever did.
Still, I wonder:
Does she make you smile,
the way I used to?
Do her eyes sparkle like starlight,
brighter than mine ever did?
Is her voice so like the sound of church choirs,
that mine pales in comparison?
Do you hold your pillow close at night,
wishing it was her
instead of me?
It's been a while
since I've heard your voice.
But I never forgot how good it sounded.
