Window gazing

I walked up silently behind you as you sat at the window. Your gaze was fixed
nowhere in particular outside that window, but your soul was narrowly focused
on nothing I knew of.

You had the saddest look on your face that I had ever seen. I had never felt
more alone in my life than that moment, because I knew the pain behind those
eyes. But I also knew that its cause would remain a mystery to me. This
knowledge was reinforced when you turned toward me and forced a smile to your
lips. Your body was shaking almost imperceptibly with the effort.
