Love's Substance

This, then, is the essence of my love  
the daily building up that
which is shared between us;
Beginning on the foundation that has
always been there  
an attraction, an infatuation
the ache of separation when love is still new
and so powerfully fragrant
Each day this beginning comes to
the surface of our hearts
Each day we build upon it
layer after layer, like thousands 
of years of civilization
but always aware of those first
intense moments, those happiest of days
That is how love is made so deep
while remaining so fresh and so new  
It is this daily rediscovery 
of the essence of us.
