"Holding Hands"

For the first time in sixteen years, our eyes locked.
There we were on the train between
	concourses B & C … our spouses on
	our arms.
He is “The One” I never forgot.
He was my first. He knew me well.
He understood my heart. And there he was...
        Two feet away.
And all we could do was stand there speechless.
Thoughts ripping through my mind like
fireflies … memories coming at me like
	freight-trains.
Then he smiled that heart-piercing smile.
I instantly knew that he was remembering
too. And then his features softened as he
	brushed away (a tear?).
His hand moved to the side.
We had learned sign language in school
together … “I ache”, he secretly signed
	to me.
My heart moved and then my hand:
	“I understand.”
Then his,“You’re beautiful”
 “You’re handsome”
	“I like your hair.”
 “You haven't changed.”
	“Don’t forget me.”
 “I never will.”
The train doors opened.
We all stepped out … me and mine going
left; he and his going right. And though we parted,
we somehow left the train holding hands.
