The Cry

The cry begins in my belly
As it contracts to emptiness,
Then shoots upward, taking with it
The fragments of my shattered heart.
A plaintive sigh is all that warns
Of the tidal wave of anguish
About to erupt from my eyes
And when it does, the thinking stops.
The cry becomes all consuming.
Wave after wave it continues,
Eroding the pain that caused it
‘till finally comes dark, warm sleep.
