ground breaking

breaking new ground is
not what we do by
loving the same people
as intensely as we always 
have, for people change
- it is inevitable -
the ground breaking done here
is not in the arrangements
of words, like flowers
you buy for your lady
- these wilt and wither -
the breaking of ground
is instead in the spadework of the heart
that fertile garden of love
in turning over each
shovel full of the rich loam
in discovering the newness of
life in the growing of love
again and again
season after season
year after year.
