Over Time

For so long my heart
was kept in a vault
protected, sheltered in the dark.
You found the combination 
in plain sight -
no need to crack the code.
Why no one else saw what you did
I’ll never understand.
And so you opened the vault
and moved in.
One day the lights were off
the door was closed.
My heart sealed inside again.
You only came to visit on weekends.
Then others found the combination
and told my heart a secret -
it can open the vault from 
the inside, on its own.
So out it came looking for
someone to care for
someone to care about.
But still it wandered
looking for you.
Where did you go?
The combination never changed
my heart still lives in its vault -
the one you have decorated - 
and now others see how great it is in there
for I leave it open now
hoping you will wander back in.
