Story of Life

Life, yes, they say, or
maybe they see it idealized...
It is truly stranger than
fiction, or is all reality
merely someone’s fiction?
Romance, love, tenderness,
even a kind word, genuine
human compassion...
These are all very real.
Not just some words.
Not a slave for the soul,
things to dabble at,
words to weave a
blanket out of to keep
off the cold world’s chill.
Instead - a way of life,
a life, my life,
a changing, a reckoning -
perhaps even a turning point.
How are any of us to know these things?
How are we to
know how or why we fit
into the framework of this
existence, this life as it
touches others?
Whom I loved yesterday
I even love now, even if
the love does not seem the
same, or could it just
be that I am not the same?
Those I have loved I will always love.
I am not who I used to be,
though that man still
lives inside me.
The question, then, is this -
Are we changed more by
others letting us into their
hearts, or by their love
given freely in return?
