Ah time! Ah time! is coming - and I feel it now -
trembling, my heart;
my soul is brushed
with vitriol of pain.
The beat of wings as, turning, I hear at last
the faint, brief footfall echo of your name.
Go not my love; stay yet awile
remember for a pause the times we had -
joy, laughter, talk and walking
in bush and home with many songs and smiles.
You were my lover, you my heart's possessor:
I was your pride, your partner and companion:
Together we travelled, through swamps and lonely places -
now together as we part, we touch each others' faces.
And now you've gone: it is no dream - but waking
my heart denies the dreary way ahead
for I can not go back, the train is leaving
And in the dark behind, I've left you
dead.
