Pointless

This is more about life than love...

Overwhelmed with all of my tasks to complete
Panicked with life hanging over my head
Sweeping and laundry and picking up dishes
Typing and phone calls and corrections to make
Mommy stuff, wife stuff and me stuff to do
But it all seems so pointless when you stop and think
When you're gone who will care about all the time
You spent in the garden or scrubbing the sink?
When life is over our work will be forgotten
And after all that, there will be nothing to show
No legacy in decorating your house, but it has to be done
No honor in cleaning a closet, but clutter is a burden
You can't take it with you when you become a memory
So, why bother with mindless and meaningless tasks?
Getting organized, family pictures, albums and clean carpets
New clothes and credit cards and birthday presents
Why bother with life when there really is no point?
No matter if cabinets are lined with pretty paper
And every blessed thing is set in its place
Why stick around if the world is so gray?
Each chore is just stress that has to be discarded
With cigarettes or wine or food, some escape
And then you have to escape what became your freedom
Because you find that you can't start a day without it
There's no joy when you can't finish what you're doing
Before someone else adds another weight to the balance
So why bother with lists of endless things to do?
They never get done but the list keeps on growing
Why worry about anything when the scale tips anyway?
Life just keeps coming and the days keep going
And it all gets farther away from being done
Why focus on what will be treasured on earth
After all, you can't take it with you, so what do you do?
