Window Shopping
In the short time I've taken
to walk along this street,
I've watched you
as through a store-front window.
I saw you smile, saw you frown,
watched others play with you
like a toy whose newness has gone.
I've known you as well as I could,
you've known me as well as you dared,
keeping a wall of glass between us always.
Now as I turn to walk away
(I've new streets to travel, you see)
I carry a slight regret, knowing
that even if I had emptied
all the pockets of my heart
it wouldn't have been enough
to keep you.
