the inevitable

Once again I have torn
down the frail house of cards
I built in monument to us
and in shame I let
the following thought
burn itself into my head -
If love means never having
to say you’re sorry
Why is forgiveness sometimes
unlikely unless it is asked for,
impossible unless sorrow is spoken?

Part of building a lasting love
is this -
If we make ourselves completely
vulnerable to each other
hurt is inevitable
It is what we do to repair
the breaches that determines
the true power
of our love
