City Love

Twining around each other like the various kinds of sirens,
I'm never sure just who we're trying to save.
I get in your way.
Panic floats just beneath the surface of your eyes,
Oily eyes that hold the colors of the rainbow -
And then smoke under the sun.
You cling to me, our fingers knotted at the junctions
So we don't lose each other in traffic.
You lean out the window of your face and gesture which way you're headed,
But sometimes I'm too far behind to catch the flash.
Over the years, we incline ever closer,
Buildings built quickly with shaking roots.
To pass between us, people dive through our shadows,
Blinking out into the sun with the sense they've just been through
A carefully woven thing.
We crumble into each other.
