EACH IMPORTANT GRAIN

When I was very, very small,
there was a time I tried
to catch each grain of sand
as you trickled it through
my eager fingertips.
I learned to be patient
only because you taught me.
You would give me a chance
to catch each sparkling grain,
finally satisfied, that with your help,
somehow I had held them all,
each important grain . . .
I am grown now, and you are gone . . .
but someone else realizes the
importance of this hourglass to me . . .
helping me hold each important grain . . .
every moment of our lives held close,
and this is how I know that you,
and now this new kind and caring man,
could really, truly, passionately love me.
