Ripples

I remember when we used to stand on this pier
and stare down at the surface of the lake
seeking our reflection...
And when we saw it,we would toss a stone
into its midst and marvel at the ripples
enlarging us as they dissipated and returned
us to normal...
And we would just laugh and hold each other close,
so happy to be in love...
And then, the sun would set and we could no longer see
the reflection, so we would go home...
And we would walk in eerie silence all the way there,
reflecting on the meaning of all of this...
And we would forget it all by the break of day
so we could savor this precious time...

And today I walked this same pier alone
And I stared down at my reflection
And I saw the same ripples as before...
And I didn't even need a stone.
