Maslow claimed
in the hierarchy of things
it would not qualify
for the most  basic
of  needs. 

This,
I must refute,
Meaning of course,
no ill repute.
for we salivate
at the sound
like Pavlov's hound
of love's own bell
every time 
without fail.
But we know not,
the love of this mutt
for its ring, 
its  food,
or its master.

We fantasize
yet realize
a cigar can be
just a cigar.
So, my dear Siggy,
your  theory is void
'Tis not about sex
for me, Dr Freud.

Perhaps then,
I'm Jungian
searching 
for my own harmony
between the conscious 
and subconscious.
culturally 
modifying
my own behavior
while I dream
of tasting 
that sweet icing 
atop my cake,
attempting
to have it
and eat it too.
