clown

I am sorry that
You get left sometimes
with the sadness
Behind the happy face 
I put on all day.
I try to spend my
wealth of sunshine,
even when inside 
I feel like crying.
You deserve better from me.
Still, I do hold on
tight to the darkness
within me, the shadows that
frighten me in this life.
I do try to protect you 
from that.
I know that I just need to
show you the same happy clown
that everyone else gets to see
even though you know
the heart behind the painted-on smile.
