I didn't forget yet

I heard your voice on the machine
and had to play it back twice.
I decided to return your call,
prepared only to be nice.
I had to restrain myself,
and keep my feelings inside,
for fear you'd see I'd missed you,
or see what I was trying to hide.
I spoke in metered words,
in a tone not much less than curt.
I made it clear to you,
your actions and words did hurt.
I heard the pain in your voice,
and believed you meant your regret.
But I told you then, and I'll repeat -
I haven't forgiven you, and I'll never forget.
