Summer Nights

We danced with ocean kissed sunsets
on your front lawn
every night that summer
until it was time for me to go home
the cool grass felt good beneath our feet
i held a glass of lemonade
in one hand
and a rose from your mom's garden in the other
as we danced with the last orange sherbert hughes
from the sun
the lemonade seemed to slip over the rim of the glass every time
and trickle down the side of my hand
you would look at me
and i would swing my head back
and laugh with pure delight

We spent the summer nights like that
and the days we spent lying on the beach
i remember that your skin
smelled of sun tan lotion and sand
and i remember thinking that i wouldn't have it any
other way

and every now and then you would look at me
and i would wonder if maybe you finally knew
that the girl who had always been your best friend
was in love with you

i was 14 that summer
the last summer i spent innocent
and you were just too perfect
to ever be mine.
