Cotton and Eggs
conjured eggs over easy
the scent of hickory
rides the air above the breakfast nook
where we slid the cafe curtain back
to watch the morning deer
two plates clank
two forks sing
napkins green with cotton leaves
wait dormantly to listen
and the sunrise is our candle
alone
missing you
two thousand miles of daybreak away
in an upstairs suburban apartment
you edge to the side of the bed
and take my covers with you
