he never would commit himself
to caring
whether or not
I smoked, called other guys, took a bath, gained ten pounds,
shaved my head, ran off to Oregon, bought a gun, dropped acid,
got silicone implants, paid my bills, wrecked my truck, returned
my video rentals, got a tattoo of Tweety Bird on my ass, joined
a convent, robbed a bank...
he was pretty solid, balanced, cool, okay, impenetrable
one way or the other
he would react
a little
when I walked away
but he never would break down
and beg me
to stay
