A Heart's Struggle

Me babbling to the pace of my racing heart-beat
You listening, quietly, searching my words for sense
Fears erupt from my heart as I restrain the tears
Cannot escape the reassurance in those eyes

'I don't think you realize just how much I love you
Nothing is forever, baby, but I'll love you until
this life is through . . . ' his eyes agreed with his words
My melting heart still resisted the warm truth

If I never spoke a word, would my actions not still speak for me'?
He pleaded as if for his life, and again my opposition flared
Then faded like the smoke from a diminishing fire
Truth, like water, extinguishing the irreproachable flames

Me listening, quietly, to the beating of your heart
You breathing, peacefully, content with my divorced contention
Fears dissolved, I allow myself to melt in this certain joy
Cannot escape the allegiance in your eyes
