Mnemonics

I cannot wage a war against memories
for we have not made enough of them yet
but I am also not wired that way
loving you has changed the need for that
and though the heart and the mind
keep separate sets of books
I won't audit them
for it is in the joy of writing
on the blank ages of us that I sing
so softly that you'd think I lost the will
to remember any more
but no, it's not that, really
for I love the smells of old and
fondly familiar memories that weigh on me
so softly around the edges
steeping myself in their flavor
so that I cannot help but be nostalgic
for what has pushed me
along the path to here and now with you
so overwhelming that new and exciting are
redrawn in the image of your nearness
and furnished complete with the meaning
of what we have not yet invented
out of the necessity to grow a life together
