Morning Thoughts

In the quiet of morning,
(soon gone in a hurried, out the door, don’t look back kind of way)
Coffee sipped, newspaper pulled apart, messages retrieved,
     (was her name there?)
I recall words spoken, written,
Moments of awkward silence,
    (So what else…?)
I think of times and places,
    (mostly tables)
I hear echoes of footsteps on stairs, one pair coming down, one up,
    (and meeting ere becoming fleeting)
And wonder what to do with all these daybreak thoughts.

Mull them over, write them down, save
     (and send them?)
Look at schedule, hope for the when and where of it all,
Issue two keystrokes of greeting,
And enter into another day, adding yet more to the things I ponder,
When morning quiet shall return, stay awhile and help me wonder.
