lately I've had too much time to think about love
all the love I've given away
all the love I've never received
all the love I thought was love
but was really wishful thinking
gussied up in lust & fantasy
lately I've contemplated what I know of love
and what love knows of me
love knows I have climbed the most trees
and dug the most holes
love knows I've kept a vigil
guarding the sacred crystal
I hung on his doorknob
while he went to the zoo
to be with her
love knows I looked down the alley
and saw the giant
and didn't run
love knows I learned the songs
and sang them while he slept beside me
dreaming of psychedelic paint swirled carousels
and screaming circuses
love knows I took a number
and stood in line
in dusty bare feet
squinting at the sun
love knows I spun around in mad circles
and collapsed
a dizzy girl in faded blue jeans
love knows I sent the most perfumed lipsticked letters
Chase in Korea
Chase in England
the blonde tennis player in West Virginia
the Loyola grad student in Chicago
Jay in Arlington
Jay in Kerrville
Jay in Corpus Christi
God in Heaven
I've made the rounds
love won't leave me alone
love keeps huffing and puffing
at my straw house
but I'm not complaining
really
love makes me sick
but so does too much candy
and I'll always be an advocate
of too much candy
and any time it's craved
I'll get a job at the Nokia factory
I'll work the graveyard shift
I'll work overtime
weekends
holidays
when the factory is open
I'll be there
but you know
on my lunch break
I'll be thinking
about love
especially the love
I have never had
and desperately want
so bad
I can taste it
