Comfortable Routine

When the sun sinks and the breeze comes
And I turn on quiet songs
You come to bed with me
and lay on the left while I settle in on the right
Like any married couple
I read my book and you watch the Late Show
Once I worried the passion was gone
And bought books and sought advice
Chatted with friends who entertained so many one night stands
And felt so much like a wife
Even felt like bringing someone else to my bed
Trying out sleeping on the other side instead
But in the end I am glad to be with you
Because you know how to hug me so I cry out held back tears
You see my nightmares coming
And bring me toast with peanut butter
When I need to be treated like a child
And you can scratch my back in just the right places
Kiss my nose and nuzzle my toes
and away goes my scary dreams and stormy thoughts
And we settle in bed
with you always on the left and me always on the right
But the bed feels best this way.
