Shadows

the darkness falls silently
    around me
as i gaze out the windows.
the glow of the lights
    outline me,
my reflection one of loneliness.
from somewhere deep inside,
a yearning causes me to turn
     to face the lights.
i see the people;
     happy couples
enthralled with each other.
my eyes search the faces,
     seeking to land
on the one who is mine.
He is no where to be found.
heart heavy, soul in shreds...
one last glance.
i slip back to the shadows,
turning in time to hide
     one solitary tear.
